Dear Sir John,

The uncertainty of the mail's arrival and the certainty of the Calcutta's departure coupled with my daily increased sufferings render it impossible for me any longer to refrain from pressing my application for leave of absence.

My Medical advisers strongly urge me to take my departure at all hazards feeling satisfied that their certificates will justify such a course in any quarter.

I should however be exceedingly sorry to feel myself compelled to take a step which might in any way appear disrespectful to yourself.

Heretofore it has been almost a matter of course to grant leave on sick certificate and mere length of time alone in a climate like this makes it doubly imperative on me to proceed to England.

My place too can be as well supplied on the present occasion as on former occasions. As the Criminal Sessions will be a light one I shall be able to preside on Friday next after which there is no other business on hand.

I do therefore most sincerely trust that you will be pleased to grant me leave of absence for Saturday next.
